The End...SPOILERS!!

My Opinions/ Summary...well long explanation

This book overall is amazing. Khaled Hosseini didn't just inform you the way of life for a women living in Kabul, He painted a picture. As I was reading I felt like I was sitting with Mariam and Laila and watching them struggle, Watching Laila's children get older, and watching the way the way Rasheed treated them.

Mariam begged Rasheed to leave the poor girl alone. She (the girl)  just lost her family and he wants to marry her as soon as she finds out the boy she once loved is dead as well. Maria has never asked for anything of Rasheed. But he only thought about one thing. After Mariam lost her baby and wanted nothing to do with her. Now a young her has no where to stay, Her parents are dead, she isn't married. He saw his opportunity. He saw that she was weak a desperate, so he married her and got what Mariam couldn't give him. He tossed Mariam to the side.
Now when Laila was pregnant she wasn't pregnant with his baby she was pregnant with Tarique's baby. But no one knows that but her. Rasheed treated Laila like a queen. They've been friends since they were kids. She saw him so differently not because he had one fake leg but because he was her best friend.  Mariam felt like she was gonna be thrown out so she confronted Laila and told her to stay out of his way.  Laila could do no harm because she was pregnant with his son, so he thought. After giving birth to Tariques daughter he now treats her the same way he treats Mariam. I think Rasheed is a disgusting old man. He needs to learn the difference between a women and a child. He saw one thing in Mariam and one thing in Laila. He thought that they could give him back his son that died.
He treated Laila so bad after she had the first baby. One night when the baby kept crying Laila slept on the floor with the her because Rasheed refused to have the baby sleep in their room. He made the baby wear boy clothes because he disliked her. Mariam grew fond of the baby and treated her like her own. Unfortunately Laila got pregnant with Rasheed's baby. She thought about aborting it with a hanger wire, Before she did anything she realized that the baby was innocent, the way it's father treated her or Mariam. So she kept it.
When Laila was giving birth to her second baby the Taliban had band women from the a certain hospital. Instead she was forced to go to the one that wasn't sanitary, no proper medicine, and over crowded. Laila had to have a C-section without any type of medicine.
Laila gave birth to a little boy. Just was Rasheed wanted. He treated that little boy like a prince. He bought everything for him. A way a father should. He treated him completely different from Aziza.
When the economy became so bad Rasheed lost his shop and because of the Taliban not allowing women to work, There was no money coming in. He couldn't provide for his 'family' for a long time. The only way for them to all survive was for Aziza to be put into an orphanage. Laila and Mariam were crushed. Not being able to support your child has to be the worst thing for a parent. Different people go through different things. But it seems that this particular situation happens a lot in Kabul with the mother not being able to support her child. When she was dropping off Aziza the man that worked there said it was common for mothers who can't make a living because of the Taliban is very common and that it was nothing to be ashamed about.
Laila went everyday to see her daughter, but of course there was Rasheed who made every excuse not to. Like "I'm getting old Laila I can't walk long distances like that you should know." Laila tried to even go by herself but because of the Taliban women were not aloud to be out in public by themselves. When she didn't go back they used radio antennas and whipped her on her neck, thighs, and back until she turned around and left. when she left she tried to find different ways to get there. She loved when she made it passed the Taliban because she could spend hours without having Rasheed wait for her and rush her.
One day on her way home from spending the day with The kids, Rasheed, and Mariam, Rasheed went off to work and she saw a man she thought she recognized. It was Tarique. She realized she was lied too. She realized that the man who came to the house that day and told her Tarique was dead when he woke up that day was a lie. Laila son was not fond of the man. He realized that
was not his father. Like every kid they don't want to see their mother with someone who is not their father.
Laila told Tarique about Aziza and the whole situation. Rasheed came home that night to find out who was In his home by his son. As I was reading what her son told Rasheed I was thinking "This is not good... no kid ever has a filter. This kid is Farley quite, Why can't he be quite now? why does he have to open his mouth about Tarique? Now Rasheed is gonna kill Laila, Her children will grow up without a mother, They'll have Mariam but that is not the same. No one should live their lives without their parents. And yes I understand that people do it everyday but that doesn't make it right."
For years Mariam kept her mouth shut with Rasheed. She never took action. Laila was always the one to 'talk back' and defend herself. After Rasheed found out about Tarique being in his house he flipped he went after Laila and tried to kill her. Mariam 'taking the world by storm' as I put it, ran outside found a shovel and BANGED Rasheed over the head with it. After he turned around and was about to attack Mariam she BANGED him over the head again but this time she killed him! She finally did it she spent most of her life with a man that treated her like trash, and used her for his sexual needs. A man who likes to marry girls that could be his daughter.
Laila panicked like any other sane human being would. Mariam told her it would be okay that they would all run away together with Tarique. But after thinking it over Mariam realized that isn't the life she wants. That is the life she wants Laila to have. She takes the blame for everything. She lets Laila take her kids and Tarique and move on. Mariam lasted 10 days in the prison before she was executed. Reading that part was hard because it's like I was there. It was like I sat back and watched it happen. I understand that this is a book and I didn't know her but I grew an attachment to a character. It sounds crazy but it happens.
